PI Impact Project create ‘Becoming a Principal Investigator: Planning for Impact Toolkit’

Following a series of pilot workshops with medical device researchers at CÚRAM in 2020, the PI Impact team, supported by CÚRAM Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Medical Devices, are delighted to announce the design and development of the ‘Becoming a Principal Investigator: Planning for Impact Toolkit’ to support early career researchers and nascent PIs involved in medical device research to take on the PI role and plan effectively and more holistically for impact. The toolkit can be used alongside other impact tools and resources, and utilises an innovative and novel ecological framework for researchers to prepare and map the potential impact of their research activities.

The toolkit, and supporting learning materials to more effectively engage with the toolkit, are available to download at: PIImpact.com

PI Impact develop White Paper on PI role preparation and planning for impact in medical device research

The ‘Preparing Scientists for the Principal Investigator Role and Impact in the Medical Device Sector – White Paper’ was developed by members of the PI Impact team Prof James Cunningham of Northumbria University, Prof Caroline McGregor and Dr Brendan Dolan, both of NUI Galway. The PI Impact: Research in Medical Devices project is support by CÚRAM SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices and is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and the European Regional Development Fund.

This White Paper, which includes a foreword by Prof Abhay Pandit, Scientific Director of CÚRAM, provides an overview and analysis of the important and complex role of the PI in medical device research processes and the need to support these scientists to become more impactful in their research activities, and concludes with a set of recommendations in this regard. The ‘Preparing Scientists for the Principal Investigator Role and Impact in the Medical Device Sector – White Paper’ is available to download at: PIImpact.com
